In their formative years, children are naturally curious about the world around them. You may often hear them ask multitudes of questions about why things are the way they are, or how certain discoveries happen.
Families can support and encourage this curiosity at home through simple, hands-on science activities inspired by Montessori principles. These experiments allow children to explore, observe, and absorb concepts at their own pace, understanding their surroundings with a bit of awe and wonder.
Here are some things to try at home!
Seeds in a Jar
What You Need:

Bean seeds

Cotton balls or paper towels

A clear glass jar

Water
Activity:
Place damp cotton balls inside the jar, and position the seeds between the cotton and the glass. Place the jar near a sunny window and encourage your child to observe it each day.
Ask them about changes they notice. What has changed since yesterday? Are the roots growing?

This activity encourages patience, responsibility, and careful observation. As children care for their growing seeds, they develop a deeper understanding of how living things grow and change over time.
Sink or Float?
What You Need:

A large bowl or container

Various household items: a pebble, spoon, leaf, a small toy, sponge, etc
Activity:
Fill the container with water. Invite your child to examine each object and predict whether it will sink or float before placing it into the water. Encourage them to compare results and discuss observations.
Ask a few questions. What do you think made this object sink? Why did this object float?

This activity promotes critical thinking, observation skills, and confidence as they test their own ideas and make predictions.
Color Mixing Discovery
What You Need:

Clear cups or containers

Water

Food coloring in primary colors (red, blue, and yellow)

Spoon or dropper
Activity:
Fill separate cups with colored water. Invite your child to mix two colors together using the spoon or dropper. Observe the new colors that appear and encourage them to experiment with different combinations.
Ask open-ended questions such as: What color did these two form? Which color combination do you like best?

This activity encourages curiosity, creativity, and experimentation. Children learn through sensorial experience while strengthening their observation, language, and problem-solving skills.

Static Electricity Butterfly
What You Need:

Butterfly printable or paper butterfly

Tissue paper (cut into small pieces)

Balloon

Scissors
-
Glue (to assemble the butterfly, if needed)
Activity:
Prepare the butterfly and place small pieces of tissue paper nearby. Inflate a balloon and rub it against your hair or a wool sweater to create static electricity. Hold the balloon just above the tissue paper and watch as the pieces lift and cling to the balloon or "jump" onto the butterfly.
Questions can be: What happened when the balloon got close? What made the tissue paper pieces "jump"?
Montessori Touch:
This activity introduces the concept of static electricity through hands-on discovery. As they watch the tissue paper move toward the balloon, they practice observing, making predictions, and learning that some forces can be felt and seen through their effects.
Explore Colors with Ice
What You Need:

Ice cubes

Liquid food coloring (2-3 colors)

Small bowls or cups

An eyedropper, pipette, or spoon

A tray or shallow container
Activity:
Place the ice cubes on a tray or in a shallow container. Invite your child to use a dropper or spoon to add different colors of food coloring onto the ice. Watch as the colors spread, mix, and create new shades while the ice slowly melts.
Ask questions. What happens when two colors meet? How does the melting ice change the way the colors move? Can you make a new color by mixing two together?
Montessori Touch:
As the ice melts, children observe how water carries colors across the surface and blends them together. This simple experiment nurtures concentration, visual discrimination, and an understanding of how materials change under different conditions.
